Advantages Of GTO Over BJT

GTO provides many advantages over BJT. which are given below:

1. GTO has a higher blocking voltage capability.
2. It has a high ratio of peak controllable current to average current.
3. It has a high ratio of peak surge current to average current, typically 10:1.
4. It provides high ON-state gain(anode current to gate current) typically 600.
5. Pulsed gate signal of short duration.

 

The difference between GTO and SCR are as follows:

1. In SCR, only the 'ON' function is controllable, but in GTO both 'ON' and 'OFF' functions are controllable.
2. GTO uses both negative and positive pulses in operation on the other hand SCR uses only positive pulses.
3. Both SCR and GTO are a type of thyristor with four semiconductor layers, but with a little different in structure.
