Cladding

The outer layer of the fuel rods is called cladding. This layer standing between the coolant and the nuclear fuel. It is designed to prevent radioactive elements from leaking into the coolant and contaminating it. Cladding materials are stainless steel or aluminum.

 

Properties of cladding

1. It should be able to withstand high temperatures within the reactor.
2. It should have high corrosion resistance.
3. It should have high thermal conductivity.
4. It should not have a tendency to absorb neutrons.
5. It should have sufficient strength to face up to the effect of radiations to which it's subjected
